Yorkshire Building Society Branch Closures

January 2017 – Yorkshire Building Society has announced the closure of a number of branch offices.  They plan to close 20 branches branded as Yorkshire Building Society in May and 28 branches branded as Norwich & Peterborough Building Society.  YBS took over N&PBS in 2011. This will reduce the total number of branches to 260.
The society stated that the closures are due to “shifts in market conditions” and the increasing desire of members to carry out transactions online. Three banks have also announced proposed branch closures for this year.  Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank is to close 79 branches, HSBC is to close a further 62 branches in addition to those already announced and TSB will close 38.

Apart from Nationwide, which opened a branch in Glastonbury, only Metro Bank has made a commitment to opening – rather than closing branch offices.  Since launching its first branch in the summer of 2010, Metro Bank has expanded its network to 45 with three further openings in the pipeline. Most are south of Cambridge with a heavy concentration in London.
